Peel Family Mediation Services (PFMS) was created to provide mediation services, internship, education, and information for families going through a separation/divorce.

What is Mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary process where the parties in a dispute meet, with a neutral third party to try to resolve their issues. An experienced mediator assists the parties to work toward an agreement, in ways that will minimize upsets and disruption for the family. The mediator does not make the decisions, but instead supports the parties in arriving at their own decisions.

History

The Peel Family Mediation Service was created to meet the demand for accessible quality family law mediation and public education services in Peel.  It is the result of the work of judges, lawyers, social workers, mediators and others who serve those going through family breakdowns. Our services include:

1. On-Site Mediation
2. Off-Site Mediation
3. Mandatory Information Programs (MIP)
4. Mediation Internships
5. Research & Outreach
6. Information and Referral Coordinator at the Family Law Information Centre at the courthouse (FLIC)

All of our services are available in French and we attempt to meet the diverse language and cultural needs of our community. We focus on addressing this diversity in all our services.

Objectives

Peel Family Mediation Services seeks to:

• encourage and provide options for a more efficient and constructive process for the resolution of custody, access and other family law disputes;
• provide mediation with a priority given to issues directly impacting children;
• provide basic information to the community and to individuals, about the separation experience, alternate dispute resolution, court process and role of persons involved;
• provide services of a consistently high quality and to meet or exceed the standards of practice set by the provincial government;
• reach out to the community and make services provided by Peel Family Mediation Services as accessible as possible;
• systematically gather and analyze information about the services provided, in order to support ongoing service improvement and contribute to broader academic knowledge about court-based mediation and information services;
• complement those services available from the private mediation community and encourage the use of private mediators, when possible;
• be sensitive to the diversity in the Regional Municipality of Peel and to reflect this diversity in Peel Family Mediation Services’ management structure and decisions; and
• contribute to the availability of trained mediators in the community.
